The standout features of WhatsApp.

The standout features of WhatsApp.

You must have used WhatsApp. Who doesn’t? How silly question I’m asking. It is used by almost every smartphone user. Isn’t it? There are dozens of similar apps in the Google Play Store and Apple Store, which have similar functionality like WhatsApp. But there are some standout features which makes it unique. In this article, I’ll discuss the standout features of WhatsApp. So let’s get started.

“Star” messages to find it later

When somebody sends an important message to you on WhatsApp, you can’t save it. Finding it later can be a mess, But now, WhatsApp introduced a cool new feature.

WhatsApp now lets you “star” messages. For this, you have to long-press any message, choose the star in the top menu bar, and move on. Later, when you want to look up any bookmarked message, then go to Menu > Starred Messages and you’ll see them all, listed chronologically.

Note: The starred messages can also be searched. You can also “unstar” a message later so that the Starred messages can be cleaned up easily.

Back up chats to Google Drive

If you accidentally delete your WhatsApp chat history, you can restore it in a few steps. But what if you somehow lost your phone, or got a new one, or had to factory reset? While WhatsApp backs up chat history regularly on the Google Drive. So you can restore you chat history during the fresh installation of the app.

WhatsApp for Android lets you automatically back up your chat history to Google Drive. For this, go to Menu > Settings > Chats and Calls > Chat Backup > Google Drive Settings and set it up. I’d recommend to back up your chat daily (you can choose weekly, monthly, or manual).

Note: You get 1 TB of Google Drive storage for free.

Custom notifications for People and Groups

We know that some contacts and chat groups are more important than others, obviously? Well, then you should set a different type of notification for them. WhatsApp allows you to do exactly this via custom notifications feature.

For doing this you have to open any chat, tap the title bar, there you’ll find an option for Custom Notifications. Open it and set the desired notification alert for it. You can set the notification tone, vibration effect, popup notification, and the color of the LED light for new messages. For Whatsapp voice calls, you’ll only get custom ringtones and vibrations.

Group description

WhatsApp groups are the best way to communicate with many people at the same time. Keeping in mind the importance of groups, WhatsApp has rolled out the Group description feature. This feature allows users of the group to add up to 500 characters description for the members of any group.

For doing this you have to open the group, tap the title bar, there you’ll find an option for “Add group description”. Open it and add the desired group description for it. Once the group description is added, the group chat gets a notification as well that specific group member (his/her Name) has changed the group description. The same thing happens If any user removes the description.

Delete and revoke messages, sent by mistake

WhatsApp is evolving day by day. Recently, WhatsApp added the ability to delete and revoke messages after you’ve sent them. You’ll be able to delete messages up to seven minutes after you sent them, and they’ll disappear from conversations or group chats.

To delete the messages you’ll get a new option after you select delete, allowing you to “delete for everyone” instead of just from your own device. WhatsApp does warn that “recipients may see your message before it’s deleted or if the deletion was not successful,” so it’s not a guarantee. It’s also possible that WhatsApp users will still see messages in notifications before they’re deleted.

Either way, this is a great feature for those who accidentally sent a wrong message to any people or group and he/she wants to delete it immediately.

Only Admins to send group messages

This is by far the best feature of the WhatsApp in my opinion. The Groups feature is often used by family members for staying in touch, business associates to share files and for interacting with people with various interests. But some users spam the group with irrelevant messages. Moreover, some users spam the group with fake news, rumors, and religious hatred messages.

Recently, WhatsApp added a new group setting where only admins are able to send messages to a group. This is a way for people to use Groups in order to simply receive important announcements and information, including parents and teachers at schools, community centers, and non-profit organizations. By adding this setting, it may encourage many more brands, teachers, restaurants and political organizations to create WhatsApp Groups as a way to provide one-way updates and news rather than signing up for SMS alerts.

You can enable this feature by opening Group Info by tapping on the name of the group at the top of the conversation. Then tap Group Settings > Send Messages > Select Only Admins. This setting is now being rolled out to all users around the world on the latest supported versions of WhatsApp.

Things to keep in mind

But please make sure that you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed on your smartphone to avail these benefits. If not then update it immediately and enjoy.

Important Note: Please don’t spam the group thread with the irrelevant messages. Also, don’t spread out the religious hatred messages and rumors. Please check out any messages and links multiple times before sending or forwarding, and do check that the messages or links are genuine or not because forwarding any fake messages and links can break out chaos or even more than that. Be a smart one.

There are lots of other features also available for sure which makes WhatsApp a unique app, but I discussed only few which I found useful. Please tell in the comment section that which other features you think makes WhatsApp unique.

So that’s it for today guys. I hope you would have enjoyed it. If you have any suggestions and queries related to the post and know some unique features, let me know in the comment section below. Please do share this post to your circle to explore the knowledge you must know.

Thank you.
